Marsaxlokk

The extensive archeological remains at tas-Silg show that Marsaxlokk from ancient times was considered a sacred locality, but the area was completely abandoned for several centuries when Malta was continually raided by Moslem corsairs. During the 19th century Marsaxlokk became a summer resort and the church dedicated to our Lady of Pompei became the parish church of the locality in 1897. The parish is today the venue of a national pilgrimage every year on the 8th May.
