This is a troglodytic church and according to Mgr Dusina originally it was dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The front part of the church was rebuilt in 1648 and a sacristy was added to it in 1670. In 1835 Msida became a subsidiary parish of Birkirkara and in 1867 a parish of its own right, and the church of the Immaculate Conception became the parish church up till when the present church of St. Joseph was built.
